Comfort Height (445mm) vs Standard Height Toilets

Standard toilet pan height in the UK ranges from 390–410mm (pan rim to floor, without seat). Adding a standard seat (approximately 20–25mm), this gives a seated height of 410–435mm. For most average-height adults (5'4"–5'10"), this requires a knee flexion angle of approximately 95–105° when seated — comparable to a standard chair.

Comfort height (also called ADA height in the US or accessible height in UK standards) refers to pan heights of 430–460mm. The Aachen 178's 445mm pan height, with the included soft-close seat (adding approximately 20–25mm), delivers a seated height of approximately 465–470mm ,  within the 450–475mm range recommended in BS 8300:2018 for accessible WC pan heights.

Why comfort height matters in practice:

User Group Benefit of 445mm Comfort Height
Elderly users Reduced knee and hip load when standing from seated; less strain on quadriceps
Post-surgery patients (knee/hip replacement) Elevated height reduces extreme joint flexion prohibited in early recovery
Users with arthritis or joint pain Less force required to achieve standing posture
Taller adults (6'+) Standard height creates uncomfortable knee angle; comfort height corrects posture
Pregnant women Lower centre of gravity makes standing from low seat more difficult; raised height reduces effort

Height comparison:

Toilet Type Pan Height With Seat Seated Posture
Standard toilet 390–410mm 410–435mm Knees above hips — traditional
Comfort height (Aachen 178) 445mm ~465–470mm Knees near hip level — ergonomic
Accessible WC (BS 8300:2018) 440–460mm 450–475mm ✅ Recommended accessible range
Building Regulations reference: UK Building Regulations Part M (Access to and Use of Buildings) and BS 8300:2018 specify a toilet seat height of 450–475mm for accessible WC facilities in new-build and renovated homes. The Aachen 178 at 445mm pan height + seat meets this specification, making it suitable for accessible bathroom planning under Part M without an additional height-raising frame.

FAQs
What type of waste outlet does the Aachen 178 have?

The Aachen 178 has a P-trap outlet — a horizontal waste connection to a soil pipe in the wall behind the toilet. This is the standard outlet type for most UK bathrooms. Confirm your bathroom has a horizontal (P-trap) wall waste connection at the correct height before purchasing. If your existing toilet uses an S-trap (vertical floor outlet), the waste pipe will need to be re-routed before the Aachen 178 can be installed.

How much water does the Aachen 178 use per flush?

The Aachen 178 uses 3 litres for a half flush (liquid waste) and 6 litres for a full flush (solid waste). Both comply with UK Water Regulations 1999 (maximum 6 litre flush). Replacing a pre-2001 single-flush toilet (9–13 litres) with the Aachen 178 can reduce toilet water consumption by 55–65% — approximately 18,000–27,000 litres per year per household.
